Hematopoietic Stem Cells Regulate Mesenchymal Stromal Cell Induction into Osteoblasts Thereby Participating in the Formation of the Stem Cell Niche

This article from the August 2008 issue of Stem Cells  provides the first evidence of a reciprocal cooperation between HSCs and the stem cell niche. It was determined that HSCs were responsible for direct mesenchymal differentiation toward osteoblastic lineage.

Comparison of Sternal, Iliac, and Humeral Bone Marrow Aspiration in Beagle Dogs

The sternum is known to be a suitable site for bone marrow aspiration; it is accessible (soft, with minimal soft tissue covering) and viable (hematopoiesis remains active throughout adulthood). However, surgeons have been deterred by the concern over thoracic injury when accessing the sternum. Researchers in this study performed bone marrow sternal aspiration with ordinary equipment and found it to be feasible and safe in small dogs under either general anesthesia or sedation.

A Prospective Comparison of 3 Approved Systems for Autologous Bone Marrow Concentration Demonstrated Nonequivalency in Progenitor Cell Number and Concentration

This 2014 publication reports the findings of a head-to-head evaluation of three bone-marrow processing (centrifugation) systems: the Harvest SmartPrep 2 BMAC, Biomet BioCUE, and Arteriocyte Magellan systems. Researchers measured progenitor cells both before and after centrifugation, via connective tissue progenitor (CTP) counts.
